For the fifth year in a row, we will be setting out to explore the Ohio & Erie Canal by bike, this year from Cleveland to Roscoe Village. The trip will be three days long this year, broken down into daily rides of 60, 40, and 40 miles. Joining me this year as core riders are Jeremy Varner (fifth year), Vince Morber (fifth year), and Joe Nosse (third year). This year's ride is a tune up for next year's 300 mile fundraiser for the Organization for Autism Research. We would love to have some company on the ride from any of you that would enjoy coming for any part of the ride. This is not a hardcore ride! We are all about relaxing and spending quality time in the great outdoors enjoying the history of the Ohio & Erie Canal and the Towpath Trail, one of our area's greatest recreational amenities!
Stage 1: Start out at the location of the future Canal Basin Park at the Cuyahoga River in Cleveland's Flats (east bank) at ~0800. Ride along Cleveland's industrial roads until joining up with the Towpath Trail at Steelyard Commons. Follow the Towpath Trail to Thornburg Station for a quick breakfast at Yours Truly. Continue along the Towpath Trail through the Cuyahoga Valley National Park to Peninsula and the Winking Lizard for Lunch. Stage 2: Ride the Towpath Trail from Peninsula after lunch to Akron. We'll make a potential stop in downtown Akron for a drink, probably at 69 Taps or the Ohio Brewing Company. From Akron, we'll follow a mixed route of roads and trail to Canal Fulton where we'll spend our first night. Feel free to join us for evening drinks at the Canal Boat Lounge in Canal Fulton where Dave and Joe will be reuniting with old friends from grade school 25 years ago!
Stage 1: We'll depart Canal Fulton sometime between 0800-0900 for points further south. We'll follow the Towpath Trail through Stark County to the end of the trail just north of Tuscarawas County. We'll procede along SR 212 to Bolivar for lunch at Yesterday's on the Canal.
Stage 2: After lunch, we'll follow the Towpath Trail out of Bolivar to Zoarville. We'll utilize the Old Zoar Trail from Zoarville to just outside of Dover. We'll then proceed on a road route from there to New Philadelphia. Everyone is welcome to join us for refreshments at the Broadway Brewhouse just off the square in New Philadelphia that night.
Stage 1: Ride from New Philadelphia on SR 416 and US 36 to Roscoe Village. Stops in Port Washington, Newcomerstown, and Canal Winchester will be included in the route. Join us for a family fun at Roscoe Village that afternoon as we celebrate Joe's birthday. Included will be the many shops of Roscoe Village as well as a canal boat ride aboard the Monticello III.
